The South of France is not only incredibly beautiful, but also easy to visit. Traveling around the French Riviera is made convenient with many towns being connected by train and offering simple driving options. A train line runs smoothly along the coastline, linking cities like Marseille and Menton. For example, Nice and Monaco are only 20 minutes apart by train, making it easy to explore both in one day. This region is known for its reputation of attracting the rich and famous, but you don’t need to be either to have a great time.

Whether you're looking for relaxation or to explore the local attractions, there's something for everyone. With the ease of parking, even in ancient hill towns that have modern parking decks, the whole area is incredibly accessible. Enjoy the scenic views, beautiful spots, and famous locations while exploring the Mediterranean coast on a coastal journey that brings you closer to the famous towns and historical places of the region.

Here are some of our top towns to visit on the French Riviera (listed randomly)

Nice

Nice is an ideal town to start your exploring of the region. It's packed with attractions, hotels, and restaurants, making it perfect for a long stay. Located on the stunning Mediterranean coast, Nice offers easy access to nearby towns like Monaco, Menton, Antibes, Cannes, and Saint Tropez, all just a short train ride away.

When in Nice, make sure to visit La Colline du Château, a park with incredible views of the beach and the Promenade des Anglais, which is perfect for taking scenic photos. This spot gives you a fantastic scenic overlook of the famous Nice beach. The waterfall in the park is a hidden gem, and you’ll also get a lovely view of the port. If you're looking for a more local experience, explore the Old Town with its variety of restaurants, giving you a true taste of the area's cultural charm. With its coastal beauty, peaceful atmosphere, and vibrant spots, Nice offers a perfect mix of relaxation and exploration.

Eze

Eze, a stunning medieval village perched on a hilltop 1,400 feet above the French Mediterranean, offers one of the most memorable experiences on the French Riviera. If you want to make the most of your visit, it's best to arrive early, around 9 am, or even 8 am to avoid the crowds that flood the narrow stone streets later in the day. Staying at the luxurious Hôtel Château de La Chèvre d’Or, a 5-star property, provides an unforgettable experience, though the price tag can be steep, so using Amex Platinum benefits helps offset the cost.

If you’re not staying overnight, take the bus from Nice instead of the train, as it drops you closer to the entrance of the town. For those who enjoy hiking, the rugged Nietzsche Trail offers a more adventurous way to reach the town, though the bus is a better option for most visitors. Make sure to check out Le Jardin Exotique for stunning views and unforgettable sights.

Monaco

When visiting the Principality of Monaco, you'll find a place that truly represents luxury. This tiny, second smallest country is known for being the most densely populated in the world. We planned a day trip from Nice to explore, but our experience was a bit unexpected when we arrived at the train station only to find that all train service was suspended due to an accident. Despite the chaotic and crowded situation, we made the most of our time and still got to enjoy some of the best attractions in Monaco. The Prince's Palace is a must-see and you can even book a tour to explore the historical site.

Monaco

Don't miss the famous changing of the guard ceremony at 11:55 am. Nearby, the Monaco Cathedral is another spot you can't miss, where you can visit the grave of Princess Grace (known as Grace Kelly). We also planned to check out the car collection of the Prince of Monaco, where for just 10 Euros, you can see nearly 100 luxury cars. The Monte Carlo Casino is another iconic building in Monaco, and even if you're not a high roller, you can still experience the thrill of gambling. For 17 euros, you can visit all the rooms, or just enjoy a few slot machines for free after 2 pm. Monaco offers a mix of sightseeing, historical charm, and iconic spots that make it a memorable visit.

Saint Paul de Vence

Saint Paul de Vence is one of our favorite towns in the South of France. Known as the oldest medieval town in the region, it's also one of the busiest. The town is larger than Eze and offers a wide range of restaurants that help it easily absorb crowds. We drove from Nice, parking in a modern parking garage just outside the city walls.

There is a variety of reasonably priced accommodations, including hotels and bed-and-breakfast-style country houses, many with pools and within walking distance of the town. We had dinner at Le Tilleul on the patio, feeling like we were eating in an Impressionist painting. This town is a must-see for anyone planning a wonderful visit to the South of France,

Antibes

During our visit to Antibes, we were pleasantly surprised by how much this coastal town had to offer. On our drive from Saint Paul de Vence to Marseille, we decided to explore the local market on a Sunday. The market was vibrant with a perfect blend of fun items for visitors and authentic products for locals. One of the town's biggest attractions is its sandy beaches, a welcome contrast to the pebble beaches found elsewhere along the French Riviera.

Antibes

After grabbing a quick lunch, we sat on a bench at the harbor, watching the boats and super yachts—the harbor even has a heliport for the uber-rich to quickly reach their mammoth yachts. The old city of Antibes is also worth exploring, where you can walk atop the city wall for a better view of the harbor.
